Euro 2024 has arrived, bringing together the best teams in Europe to determine who will be crowned the kings of the continent. The competition promises a summer of thrilling football, as powerhouse nations and dark horses alike vie for glory.
Italy enters the tournament as the reigning champions, but the Azzurri face stiff competition from a host of other top-tier teams. England, France, Spain, and Portugal all harbor hopes of lifting the trophy, while host nation Germany aims to seize the advantage of playing on home soil.
The tournament kicked off on June 14 and will run through July 14, culminating in the grand final. Many of the world’s top players are set to light up the event, with stars like France's Kylian Mbappé and England’s Jude Bellingham commanding the spotlight.
Even the smaller nations like Georgia and Albania are eager to spring some surprises and prove their mettle against Europe's elite. In total, 16 of the 24 teams competing in the group stage will advance to the knockout stages, promising ample drama and excitement.
Venues
The 17th edition of the European Championship will see 24 teams compete across 10 German cities. For this event, UEFA has renamed the venues to streamline and standardize the host locations.
During the group stage and Round of 16, matches will be held at Arena AufSchalke (Gelsenkirchen’s Veltins-Arena, home of Schalke 04), Cologne Stadium (Cologne’s RheinEnergieStadion, home of FC Köln), Waldstadion (Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park, home of Eintracht Frankfurt), and Leipzig Stadium (Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena, home of RB Leipzig).
Stuttgart Arena, Volksparkstadion, and Düsseldorf Arena will host additional matches up until the quarterfinals. These games will take place at Stuttgart’s MHPArena (home of VfB Stuttgart), Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion (home of Hamburger SV), and Düsseldorf’s Merkur Spiel-Arena (home of Fortuna Düsseldorf).
The semifinals will be held in Munich and Dortmund. Munich’s Allianz Arena (home of Bayern Munich) and Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park (home of Borussia Dortmund) will be critical stages for the contenders.
The grand finale will be hosted by Berlin's Olympiastadion (home of Hertha BSC), a fitting venue for the event’s climax.
