Nakobe Dean Overcomes Injury, Shines in Eagles Linebacker Role
Sunday marked a significant turning point for Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean. Following a summer marred by a foot injury, Dean put on an impressive display, solidifying his place as a key player in the Eagles' defense.
Climbing the Depth Chart
Last season, Dean was handed a starting linebacker role, but this year, he's earning his position the hard way. After gradually working his way into first-team reps, Dean's perseverance is paying off. His performance this past Sunday was a standout moment, showcasing his readiness for the upcoming season.
"I didn't have a day off, I didn't have an offseason. It was five days a week until training camp started as far as getting that foot right, getting better. It's like I'm not back, I'm better," Dean said, reflecting on his grueling offseason regimen. This dedication is evident in his play on the field.
Impactful Plays
During Saturday's practice, Dean made a notable impression. On the first play of 11-on-11s, he laid out running back Will Shipley after a pass reception. Moments later, he broke up a pass aimed at DeVonta Smith, epitomizing the aggressive physicality the Eagles have been yearning for from their defense.
Dean credits his resurgence in part to new linebackers coach Bobby King. "He made it a main emphasis of block destruction, of blitzing because Vic's been calling our number, and tackling is a universal thing. We don't want no missed tackles, definitely not at the linebacker position, so it's been a kind of universal topic we've been on in camp," Dean explained.
Defense and Versatility
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has shown encouragement in Dean's progress. Fangio's defensive philosophy, emphasizing physical play and versatility, has benefitted Dean. "The type of linebacker I am, I feel like you need to be able to do everything. You need to be able to cover, you need to be able to fill that A-gap, you need to be able to blitz the quarterback. And I feel like those are things I do good," Dean stated confidently.
Despite the reduced tackling in camp, Dean aims to add a physical edge to every play. "We don't tackle as much in camp, so you try to thud as much as you can. In past years, I feel like I two-handed touch always. I want to thud," he said, highlighting his commitment to a more aggressive style.
Offensive Embrace
Interestingly, Dean's physical approach has been well-received by his offensive counterparts. "Offensive guys have embraced it. They embraced the toughness. They want a feel. The offensive starters, they haven't played in the preseason (games). So the first time they get hit, they don't want it to be Week 1," Dean noted. This mutual respect between offensive and defensive players is a testament to the team's unified pursuit of excellence.
Poised for Success
With Week 1 approaching, Dean's hard work and determination have brought him closer to securing the starting linebacker position. His camp performance, aligning with his expectations, ensures he's ready for the challenges ahead. "I want to play. And I want to be the first one that plays. But I can't control that. The only thing I can control is what I come out here and do every day, work hard and continue to get better," Dean reiterated.
Dean, now in his third-year career in the NFL, appears to be hitting his stride at just the right time. As the Eagles look to bolster their defense with more physical plays, Dean's presence and versatility will undoubtedly be pivotal. His journey from injury to impact player is a story of resilience and skill, signaling a promising season ahead for the Eagles and their formidable linebacker.
