The Detroit Lions are eagerly anticipating the return of running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained during a practice session earlier this month. Head coach Dan Campbell remains hopeful about Gibbs' availability for the Lions' Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
Optimism from the Coaching Staff
Dan Campbell provided an encouraging update on Gibbs' condition. "Our plan is to get him going next week," Campbell said, expressing confidence in the young running back's recovery process. "He's trending the right way," he added, emphasizing that Gibbs is on track to rejoin the team in time for the regular season opener.
The Lions are currently focused on their final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This matchup is pivotal, as the team is not only preparing to finalize their roster but also looking forward to reintegrating several key players who have been nursing injuries.
Gibbs' Impactful Debut Season
Jahmyr Gibbs had a standout debut season, amassing 945 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 182 carries. This performance placed him second on the team in rushing yards, touchdowns, and carries. Additionally, he demonstrated his versatility as a receiver, recording 52 receptions for 316 yards and one touchdown.
Gibbs' contribution extended into the playoffs, where he added 144 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries, alongside 94 receiving yards and one touchdown on 14 receptions. His multifaceted skill set has made him an integral part of the Lions' offensive strategy, and his absence has certainly been felt during his recovery period.
Preparation for the Rams Game
With the final preseason game scheduled against the Steelers on Saturday, Campbell is optimistic about getting a number of other key players back on the field. Tight end Sam LaPorta, offensive tackle Dan Skipper, guard Kevin Zeitler, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, and defensive lineman DJ Reader are all listed as potential returnees. "We're hoping the day after [this Saturday's preseason finale against the Steelers], I think we're going to get a lot of guys back," Campbell noted.
The team is preparing for a rigorous week of practice leading up to their opening game against the Rams. "So, we're about to get a whole group of guys back, hopefully Sunday," said Campbell. "And then they'll get next week's practice before we get ready for the Rams and then we do Rams practice. So, Gibbs falls into that boat."
Despite limited practice time with Gibbs, Campbell remains optimistic about his readiness. "Wish we had more practice with him, but as far as the health of it, he's healing and he's on schedule to be back, and get his legs back under him. And we'll see where he's at," he said.
As the Lions gear up for their final preseason game, fans and the coaching staff alike are eager to see Gibbs and other key players return to full health, aiming to build on last season's momentum and make a strong start against the Rams.
