Tyus Jones Joins Phoenix Suns on One-Year Deal
In a strategic move aimed at bolstering their backcourt, the Phoenix Suns have inked a one-year, $3.3 million deal with 28-year-old point guard Tyus Jones. Coming off a solid season with the Washington Wizards, where he averaged 12.0 points and 7.3 assists during the 2023-24 campaign, Jones brings a wealth of experience and playmaking ability to an already star-studded Suns roster.
The Suns, who are eyeing an NBA championship, presented Jones with a veteran's minimum salary contract, a testament to their belief in his potential to make a significant impact. Jones, who began his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves and spent his first four seasons (2015-19) there, has shown steady growth in his game. He subsequently played for the Memphis Grizzlies for four seasons before his stint with the Wizards.
Jones expressed enthusiasm about joining the Suns, highlighting the recruitment efforts of the team's governor Mat Ishbia and the vision laid out by head coach Mike Budenholzer.
"The chance to play for the Phoenix Suns made the most sense on a lot of levels to me and my family—beginning with the way [governor] Mat Ishbia and the front office recruited me to how coach [Mike Budenholzer] showed me how I can significantly impact a team that has a real opportunity to challenge for an NBA title as their starting point guard," Jones said.
Jones' decision to join the Suns was also influenced by extensive discussions with his agent, who presented multiple free agent offers and sign-and-trade proposals. However, the Suns' offer stood out for its potential to elevate Jones' career to new heights.
"My agent [Bradbury] walked me and my family through multiple free agent offers and sign-and-trade proposals at a number of different financial levels, but the Suns' opportunity is where I can best maximize my value for a return to free agency next year as well as give myself a chance to be part of what I think will be a special team and season," Jones added.
With the inclusion of Jones, the Suns' formidable lineup now features top-tier talent such as Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal. The addition of Jones, known for his steady play and ability to facilitate offense, provides Phoenix with an invaluable asset as they strive for a deep playoff run. His prior playoff experience with the Grizzlies in 2022, where he averaged 9.2 points, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals over 12 games, further underscores his ability to perform under pressure.
The Suns' acquisition of Jones reflects their commitment to building a well-rounded, competitive roster. As Jones steps into this new chapter of his career, both he and the organization are poised to benefit from this mutually advantageous partnership.
As the NBA season looms, all eyes will be on Phoenix to see how this new addition meshes with the existing core and how Jones leverages this opportunity to elevate his game and help guide the Suns to their championship aspirations.
