Bronny James: A Promising Guard in Development
Bronny James has stepped onto the professional basketball stage with the Los Angeles Lakers, bringing with him the hope and scrutiny that comes from being the son of NBA legend LeBron James. As a young guard, Bronny has shown both potential and areas needing growth during his stint in the NBA Summer League.
The 6-foot-2 shooting guard concluded his final two games in the league impressively, scoring 25 points on 10-of-21 shooting. This performance was a significant improvement from his initial struggles, where he shot a mere 7 for 31 overall. Overcoming an intensely rough start where he missed all 15 of his three-point attempts in the first four games, Bronny found some rhythm, converting 3 of 8 three-point shots in the last two games.
Draft and Positioning
Selected as the 55th pick by the Lakers, Bronny James has predominantly played as a shooting guard. There's ongoing consideration within the Lakers organization about his potential to evolve into a combo guard. Dane Johnson, the Lakers Summer League coach, shared insights on Bronny's adaptability and capacity for learning multiple roles on the court. "I think right now he's more of a (shooting guard), but I think he could be a combo-ish. He picks up stuff really well. We throw stuff at him — plays, coverages, defensively. He kind of picks it up really quick, so I think he could potentially be (a point guard)," Johnson commented.
The Summer League has served as an essential proving ground for Bronny. Despite his initial difficulties, he showcased his ability to play at a professional level during games against experienced teams like the Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers. His coach emphasized that with further development, he could solidify his position and contribute significantly to the Lakers. "He had two pretty good games last two. I think it's just going to help him going into the summer so we can work on different things with him. Just that confidence and knowing he can play at this level. It's still going to take a lot of time and a lot of reps," Johnson said.
Areas for Improvement
While Bronny James’ journey looks promising, there are notable areas where he needs improvement. Concerns about his ball-handling skills and the necessity of developing a consistent perimeter shot have been highlighted. His struggle with shooting consistency, particularly from beyond the arc, has shown that there's much work to be done for him to match the high expectations set by others and himself.
In his sole college season at the University of Southern California (USC), Bronny averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists, which showed glimpses of potential but also areas that required refinement. After declaring for the NBA draft, his performances in the Summer League have provided a clearer picture of his current standing and areas that need focus.
Beyond the Stats
Beyond his on-court performances, Bronny has demonstrated resilience and dedication following a challenging episode last summer. During a workout at USC, he suffered cardiac arrest and subsequently underwent surgery for a congenital heart defect. Despite this serious health scare, he returned to the court, showcasing his determination to pursue his basketball dreams.
Bronny's ability to remain focused and committed has been acknowledged by those around him. Johnson noted, "In general, he doesn't let any of that stuff get to him. He just wants to play basketball and be on a team. He's a good kid. He's listening. He's trying to learn." This attitude underlines Bronny's approach to his professional journey — one of humility, hard work, and perseverance.
Development Path
Looking at his future with the Lakers, the organization is considering utilizing the G League to further his development. Playing in the G League would provide Bronny with ample opportunities to hone his skills and gain the experience needed to transition smoothly to the NBA level.
The dynamics of father-son duos in professional sports are rare but noteworthy. In basketball, no father-and-son duo has played in an NBA game simultaneously. However, other sports have seen such combinations, with Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. playing together in Major League Baseball and Gordie Howe playing with his sons in hockey.
As Bronny James continues his journey, the basketball world watches with keen interest. His story is evolving, marked by moments of struggle and flashes of brilliance. With continued development and a supportive organization, Bronny is on a path toward potentially making a significant mark in the NBA, contributing to his team's success, and possibly even carving out a unique chapter in basketball history alongside his legendary father.
